ARKET opens flagship store in Barcelona

Nordic design and lifestyle brand ARKET is opening a flagship store in Barcelona on 5 July 2024. Located on the Passeig de Gracia, the new store (004037–940) marks the brand’s first physical destination in Spain.

With a total area of 650 square metres, the store will carry the full range of the brand’s ready-to-wear and accessories for women and men, childrenswear, body care, and interior design. Spanning the ground and first floors of a former residential building, built in 1900, the new store combines ARKET’s signature monochrome palette of soft greys with natural materials such as solid oak interiors, custom-made terrazzo flooring, and fresh green plants. The store features a large terrace facing the courtyard on the first floor, and the indoor lounge areas include restored pieces by Artek 2nd Cycle, the platform for pre-loved Artek lighting, furniture, and other everyday objects from the Finnish heritage brand.

ARKET’s design philosophy is rooted in the Nordic modernist movement of the 20th century. Coined in 1919 by Swedish art historian Gregor Paulsson, the slogan ‘More beautiful everyday goods’ captured a new, democratic approach that aimed to bridge the worlds of arts, crafts, and functional form to produce affordable and accessible items. In the Nordic region, this aspiration embraced a new aesthetic characterised by clean lines, a neutral colour palette, and solid materials drawn from nature and the northern climate. Above all, it prioritised functionality and longevity as the basis of good design.

Inspired by this heritage of simplicity and nature, and the aesthetics of slow living, ARKET’s ambition is to present a modern-day market offering a diverse range
of garments, objects, and food, all carefully made and artfully curated for a more beautiful everyday life.

The store opening will also feature a pop-up bookshop with friends from the Barcelona-based publishing house Apartamento. The ARKET and Apartamento Bookshop will offer a selection of literature on food, art, and everyday aesthetics curated by the Apartamento team.
