ARKET launches The Little Black Dress collection, a study of silhouette and movement
For the holiday season this year, ARKET honours the little black dress, a classic in women’s occasionwear of timely yet perennial relevance. In true ARKET fashion, the collection considers the historicity of this piece, connecting its founding notions with up-to-date ideas of functionality, elegance, and identity.
A staple in the contemporary wardrobe, the little black dress was originally designed in Paris during the 1920s. The idea was revolutionary at the time: the dress was intended to be a simple, flattering, accessible and versatile garment, adaptable to different occasions and worn repeatedly over time.
‘To this day, the values embodied by the Little Black Dress remain subversive and pragmatic, which applies to the wardrobe archetypes revisited by ARKET throughout the years. The context of gatherings and celebrations typical of the holiday season inspired this attempt to deconstruct the design and examine its features to suit the needs of modern women,’ says Ella Soccorsi, Head of Design and Creative at ARKET.
The limitless possibilities of a little black dress were the starting point of this festivewear project. The result is a careful study of silhouettes carried out by the in-house team of designers and dressmakers. Representing distinct forms of expressivity, body-draping, and freedom, the collection retells this story through four fundamental dresses – the backless dress, the shift dress, the cape dress, and the fit-and-flare dress – redrawn to support the modern woman that ARKET envisions throughout evenings, days, or occasions where she wishes to appear with a certain elegance yet unhindered by etiquette or formality.
The Little Black Dress collection will launch in stores and at arket.com during winter 2024.
